Is Fizz's 'recycle that spell after you play it' effect a delayed trigger, and how does it work given that the spell should be in the Trash by the time any delayed trigger would resolve?

Answer

Ruling: The effect does not work properly under current rules as written (RAW). The intended function is that the spell should be recycled instead of being trashed after being played, but the templating doesn't clearly establish this as either a delayed trigger or replacement effect.

Sequence: (As intended, not RAW)

  • Fizz's ability resolves and targets a spell in the Trash
  • You play that spell from the Trash
  • The spell resolves
  • The spell is recycled instead of going to the Trash

Nuances:

  • RAW interpretation as delayed trigger: "After you play it" could be read as a delayed trigger condition with "recycle that spell" as the effect, but this fails because the spell moves from Trash → Chain → Trash, making it a different game object that the delayed trigger cannot legally reference
  • RAW interpretation as replacement effect: Would require "instead" templating (e.g., "recycle that spell instead of trashing it") which is absent from the card
  • The effect is trivially easy to resolve as intended (recycle instead of trash) in 99% of cases, but lacks proper rules support
  • Blue Kai'sa has similar templating issues with recycling spells
  • Current rules don't support object tracking between non-board zones (Chain and Trash) for delayed triggers
